Sagitta Unveils Multi-Station Fiber Optic Polishing System

Comes Standard with Integrated Image Processing for Final Inspection

( OFC Show Introduction, March 19, 2001 )

Sagitta Ltd., a leader in automation equipment for the fiber optics industry, introduces the first fully automated and configurable multi-station polishing system with integrated cleaning stations and an image processing station for optical inspection. The Gemini-Pi polishes multiple parts at the same time and can be quickly set up to process, in a single production shift, various fiber optics components, including planar light circuits, v-groove arrays, fiber tips, capillaries, etc. The Gemini-Pi allows variable configurations of up to three12-inch polishing disks and up to three non-contact ultrasonic cleaning stations. The system is integrated with an advanced image processing station for automated optical inspection, as well as an SPC software platform for quality control. The system's modular design configuration allows users maximum flexibility. Customers can easily tailor the Gemini-Pi to optimize their polishing process recipes or to maximize their company's throughput requirements.

The polishing process of the Gemini-Pi is based on Sagitta's patented sub micron polishing technology, SÁPT. Unparalleled polishing results are obtained on a variety of base materials and part geometries, characteristic of fiber optic components. The system is equipped with a direct drive 3-axis motion platform for handling and transporting the parts from station to station until the process from polish to inspection is fully complete. Multiple parts are transported and polished on a quick load/unload part carrier, which can be used for double-sided polishing. A graphical user interface, with process recipe control and in-situ parametric diagnostics come standard with each unit.
